A 20-year-old Texas man accused of attacking OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home with a Molotov cocktail had compiled a list of artificial intelligence (AI) executives he intended to target and warned of humanity’s “impending extinction” from the technology, prosecutors said Monday.
Daniel Moreno-Gama is charged with attempted murder after he threw an incendiary device at Altman’s residence early Friday morning. The attack set an exterior gate on fire before he fled, according to police.
Less than an hour after the attack, Moreno-Gama allegedly went to OpenAI’s headquarters about 3 miles away and threatened to burn down the building. No injuries were reported at Altman’s home or at the company’s offices, authorities said.
Officials said Moreno-Gama was motivated by opposition to AI and had planned the attack in advance. “This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted and extremely serious,” FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Matt Cobo said at a news conference.
According to a federal criminal complaint, when police arrested him on Friday, they recovered incendiary devices, a jug of kerosene, a blue lighter and a document titled “Your Last Warning,” which outlined Moreno-Gama’s opposition to AI and call for the killing of AI company CEOs and their investors.
In the document, he “stated he ‘killed /attempted to kill’ Victim-1,” described as the chief executive of an AI company. He also listed the names and addresses of several other AI executives, board members and investors, prosecutors said.
He ended the document with a letter addressed to Altman: “If by some miracle you live, then I would take this as a sign from the divine to redeem yourself.”
Moreno-Gama, who also faces charges of attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm, made his first appearance in court Tuesday. His public defender said he is experiencing an “acute mental health crisis” and noted that he has a history of autism.
San Francisco Judge Kenneth Wine ordered him held without bail and set his arraignment for May 5.
Authorities are also investigating a second incident at Altman’s home. Early Sunday, two people in a car allegedly fired a gun near the property before fleeing, according to police. Two suspects were later arrested and booked on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm.

Did he use Ai, in any way,
to plan the attack.?
These idiots think they’re heroes in a real life movie plot. We’re doomed by ignorance.
Hero!
Definitely shades of the Unibomber.
