The U.S. Coast Guard announced the permanent relief of Capt. James Spitler from command of Sector San Diego following an investigation into complaints about a toxic work environment.
Spitler was initially suspended in October 2024, along with Command Master Chief Michael Dioquino, following complaints from unit personnel alleging unfair treatment and inappropriate conduct that disrupted operations and contributed to a hostile work environment. Dioquino was relieved in January.
District Eleven Commander Rear Adm. Joseph Buzzella recommended Spitler’s dismissal, citing “loss of confidence due to failures in leadership, judgment, and integrity.”
The recommendation was endorsed by Pacific Area Commander Vice Adm. Andrew Tiongson and ultimately approved by Coast Guard Headquarters.
The Coast Guard has not said whether Spitler or Dioquino will continue in the service. Spitler has served for 28 years while Dioquino has nearly 30 years of service.
Despite the leadership change, the Coast Guard said the unit remains operational. Capt. Patrick Dill has been serving as interim commander since October.
Sector San Diego oversees a large and strategic area, including 120 miles of Pacific coastline, 750 miles of the Colorado River, and the U.S.-Mexico maritime border.
