As Taiwan’s defense ministry discovered 12 Chinese warships and 91 aircraft surrounding the island, tensions in the area have risen as a result of China having finished a military drill that included “sealing off” the island and simulating targeted strikes.
China has completed a three-day military exercise around Taiwan that involved the “sealing off” of the island and simulated targeted strikes. Taiwan’s defense ministry detected 12 Chinese warships and 91 aircraft around the island on Monday. China’s Shandong aircraft carrier had also participated in the drills, which began after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met with the US House Speaker in California. The drills were not as large as those that followed Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last August. The US sent a guided-missile destroyer through contested parts of the South China Sea in response.
