China’s Ministry of State Security has stated that they have discovered multiple espionage cases targeting the country’s aerospace sector. The ministry announced on Friday that foreign intelligence agencies have been attempting to infiltrate and steal sensitive information from China’s advanced space programs.
The Ministry of State Security disclosed that the espionage activities involved efforts to induce and coerce Chinese personnel to divulge “core secrets” of the country’s projects. These projects include satellite remote sensing, satellite communications, navigation positioning, and digital earth technologies.Â
The ministry highlighted the growing competition and militarization in space, noting that the space domain has become a crucial battleground for national security. As countries worldwide continue to develop and utilize space technologies, the lack of progress in establishing international governance rules has led to a deteriorating space security environment.
China’s aerospace industry has achieved milestones, including the Shenzhou manned spaceship missions and the Chang’e lunar probe projects. Most recently, on May 3, China launched the Chang’e-6 spacecraft to collect and return samples from the moon’s far side. The ministry pointed out that these advancements have positioned China as a major competitor in the space sector, making it a target for foreign espionage.
The space economy has become a key driver of global economic growth. In 2022, the global space economy was valued at approximately $460 billion, with broader economic benefits estimated at $3.1 trillion, according to a report by the European Space Policy Institute. China’s space technologies have been extensively utilized in various sectors, including industrial and agricultural development, transportation, climate monitoring, and emergency response.
While the ministry did not specify which countries were involved in the espionage activities. It follows recent incidents of espionage allegations involving Chinese interests. Earlier this week, the United Kingdom arrested and charged three individuals accused of spying on behalf of Hong Kong’s intelligence services. Similarly, Canada has launched a public inquiry into foreign interference by China, Russia, India, and Pakistan in its recent general elections.
