In August 2023, the U.S. Marine Corps’ 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) undertook relief operations on the remote Pacific island of Bougainville following a volcanic eruption. The mission, faced with adverse weather conditions including ash-filled skies and typhoons, was centered around delivering critical aid to the residents affected by the eruption of Mount Bagana.
The 31st MEU, one of the two forward-deployed naval forces in the Asia-Pacific region, is composed of approximately 2,200 Marines and Sailors, divided into command, ground combat, aviation combat, and logistics combat elements. In July, Mount Bagana’s eruption sent smoke and ash clouds into the skies, impacting over 23,000 people, restricting access to essential resources like food and water, and preventing residents from returning to their homes.
The relief efforts, led by the U.S. Agency for International Development, involved delivering emergency shelter kits, relief commodities, and logistical support. The 31st MEU was tasked with the distribution of nearly 70,000 pounds of supplies, totaling 118 pallets of disaster relief materials. The mission required intricate planning and execution over a span of ten days.
Due to the lack of proper infrastructure like roads, the 31st MEU relied heavily on helicopter air support, utilizing Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (VMM-265), equipped with 11 Ospreys, as well as CH-53E Super Stallions, and SH-60 Seahawks. Despite the challenging circumstances, the squadron was commended for its excellent performance.
