The Camino dos Faros, or Lighthouse Way, is a remarkable but lesser-known trail along the north-west tip of Spain in Galicia. Offering a serene and more secluded experience compared to the bustling Camino de Santiago, it stretches across Galicia’s rugged coast, including the dangerous Costa da Morte. A group of friends conceptualized this path, marking it and turning it into a grassroots social movement. Today, the 200km Lighthouse Way offers travelers breathtaking landscapes, local culture, and an immersive connection to nature.

Key Points:

  1. The Lighthouse Way’s Inception: A group of six Galician friends started the Lighthouse Way project a decade ago, mapping and marking a continuous trail from the ancient whaling port of Malpica to the lighthouse in Finisterre, working with local fishermen and farmers to create a safe and scenic route.
  2. Costa da Morte’s Legacy: Known as one of the world’s most perilous shipping routes, with over 150 shipwrecks in the past century, the “Coast of Death” features 14 lighthouses. Its maritime climate, vast untamed ocean, and wild landscapes make it unique in Europe.
  3. Cultural and Ecological Awareness: Led by the president of the Lighthouse Way Association, Cristina Alonso, the project emphasizes respect for nature, unique Galician culture, and history. It also promotes low-key sustainable tourism, benefiting local communities through additional income.
  4. Intricate Path and Experience: Broken into eight stages, the Lighthouse Way passes through sandy beaches, granite cliffs, bird-filled estuaries, and wild headlands. The trail provides a deeply meditative and immersive experience for walkers, allowing them to explore hidden paths, protected coves, Iron Age hill forts, and much more.
  5. A Thriving Alternative to the Camino de Santiago: With the record-breaking popularity of the Camino de Santiago, the Lighthouse Way offers a vastly different, more secluded, and contemplative pathway. It connects travelers to ancient ways and provides space and tranquility, embodying a powerful connection to wild landscapes and local heritage.
