A man believed to be British was killed by a mob in northern Ecuador on Sunday after being accused of shooting a local resident during a festival. The incident occurred in Playas del Cuyabeno, a remote village in the Amazon region.
According to local reports, police arrested the man, whose identity has not been disclosed, around 6 a.m. after witnesses claimed he shot someone during celebrations for the Kichwa Indigenous community. He was taken to a police station while officers awaited reinforcements.
At around 12:30 p.m., a crowd stormed the station, overpowered the police, and took the man. They brought him to an area near the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and set him on fire. He died from his burns. His body was later seen on the ground, covered with a white sheet.
The man who was shot, identified locally as Rodrigo Chavez, also died. Chavez was from Lago Agrio in Sucumbíos Province.
Ecuadorian law allows Indigenous communities to handle some legal matters, but all actions must follow human rights laws. Lynching is illegal and considered homicide.
No arrests have been reported as of press time.
