Britain Warns Lebanon of Imminent Israeli Offensive

Britain has alerted Lebanon to an impending large-scale Israeli offensive expected to commence in mid-June, as reported by the Lebanese news outlet al-Akhbar. The extent and duration of the offensive remain uncertain, but Lebanese authorities have been advised to prepare accordingly. This information comes amidst escalating tensions and ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.

The warning from Britain was delivered against a backdrop of intensified diplomatic activity, with various countries cautioning Lebanese officials about the seriousness of the threat posed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia Islamist political and militant group, has been engaged in frequent attacks on northern Israel since the conflict in Gaza erupted in October. Despite these warnings, Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, asserted that while the group does not seek to broaden the conflict, it is ready to engage in full-scale war if necessary.

Qassem’s comments, made during a press conference and reported by Al-Jazeera, emphasized Hezbollah’s readiness to respond to any Israeli expansion of the conflict. He reiterated that any Israeli offensive into Lebanon would result in severe retaliation, promising devastation and displacement within Israel. Qassem also linked the Lebanese front directly to Gaza, reflecting Hezbollah’s long standing support for the Palestinian cause.

The ongoing cross-border violence has seen Hezbollah and Israel exchanging fire for the past eight months. This has raised concerns about a wider regional conflict. Hezbollah has recently escalated its activities, including the deployment of one-way attack drones targeting Israeli military positions. This marked a significant increase in the use of advanced weaponry by the group.

In parallel, diplomatic efforts continue. U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein has been actively involved in discussions with Lebanese officials, including Nabih Berri, the speaker of Lebanon’s parliament and a Hezbollah ally. Hochstein has emphasized the need for continued negotiations to achieve a resolution on the Israel-Lebanon border and to establish a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Israeli government, meanwhile, has been vocal about its stance on the ongoing conflict. Israeli spokesperson David Mencer stated that the current situation in the north is unsustainable and reiterated Israel’s commitment to securing the safety of its citizens. Education Minister Yoav Kisch called for a decisive military campaign to push Hezbollah forces beyond the Litani River, a significant geographic marker in southern Lebanon.
