Polish officials announced the arrest of a Polish citizen, identified only as Pawel K., on charges of espionage for Russia with the alleged intention of facilitating an assassination plot against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The arrest was made on Wednesday, and the suspect is accused of planning to provide critical security details about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, a major hub for military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and a frequent travel point for Ukrainian and international leaders.
According to Poland’s National Prosecutor, Pawel K. was actively in connection with individuals directly involved in the Russian military’s operations in Ukraine. His activities reportedly included preparing to pass detailed security information about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport to Russian agents, which could potentially be used to target President Zelenskyy during his visits to Poland.
The announcement from the Polish National Public Prosecutor’s Office reads:
“According to the findings of the investigation, the suspect Pavel K. declared his readiness to act for the benefit of the military intelligence of the Russian Federation and established contacts with citizens of the Russian Federation directly involved in the war in Ukraine. One of his tasks was to collect and provide the military intelligence of the Russian Federation with information on the security of the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport. This was supposed to help Russian special services plan a possible attempt on the life of the head of a foreign state, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.”
This arrest is part of a broader context of heightened vigilance in Poland, which has emerged as a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
