Army Seeks Sub-$1M Interceptor With Government-Owned IP to Expand Patriot Arsenal

The U.S. Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) at Redstone Arsenal published a formal request for information on May 15, 2026, seeking interceptors for the Patriot air defense system priced under $1 million per unit, with industry responses due May 29.

The effort addresses a measurable cost gap. The Army’s fiscal year 2027 budget prices the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) at $5.3 million per round, more than five times the new ceiling. Ukrainian forces were rationing PAC-3 MSE interceptors to one shot per target, while the Iranian-manufactured Shahed drones they faced cost roughly $20,000 to $50,000 each.

Army Maj. Gen. Frank Lozano, the service’s Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Fires, posted on LinkedIn on May 17 that the Army planned an Industry Day in Washington “in the very near future,” seeking broad participation from missile technology suppliers.

MOSAIC-26-03 covers five problem statements: complete interceptor rounds capped under $1 million, three component tracks for rocket motors, seekers, and fire control systems each capped at $250,000, plus a fifth track for a systems integrator under a Modular Open Systems Approach. Solutions must be compatible with the M903 Patriot launcher and Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), the Army’s common fire-control network, with complete rounds at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 and demonstrations required by the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said on May 7 the service intends to own the intellectual property for any winning design and use contract manufacturing.

The War Zone identified a rendering in Lozano’s LinkedIn post as the baseline FP-7, noting that Ukrainian firm Fire Point is developing an anti-ballistic interceptor variant called the FP-7.x with a target price below $1 million and a first intercept attempt planned for 2027. Fire Point said the design could be considered for U.S. requirements. The Army has not confirmed this.
