Marine veteran Ethan Hunter Hertweck, who was inspired by the quote, “All that’s necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing,” chose to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion. Hertweck served as a medic and ultimately joined the 131st Special Reconnaissance Battalion as a medic for team Vidmak. Tragically, he was killed during a mission in which he and a comrade took on approximately 12 enemy soldiers, saving their unit’s bunkers. Hertweck’s sacrifice reflects the dedication of many American veterans who felt compelled to help Ukraine in its struggle for freedom, with at least 11 Marine veterans among those who lost their lives in Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022.
