Ukrainian authorities said Monday that Russia was linked to the weekend killing of former parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy.
Parubiy, 54, was shot eight times in Lviv on Saturday, near Ukraine’s border with Poland, and died at the scene. After 36 hours, authorities arrested a suspect who allegedly carried out the attack while posing as a courier, according to National police chief Ivan Vygivsky.
Vygivsky added that the investigation pointed to Russian involvement. “We know that this crime was not accidental. There is a Russian trace in it,” he wrote on social media.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the necessary investigative actions are ongoing and that he has instructed authorities to present all available information to the public. “I thank our law enforcement officers for their prompt and coordinated work. All the circumstances of this horrendous murder must be clarified,” he added.

Parubiy was a central figure in Ukraine’s pro-European protest movements. He organized self-defense groups during the 2013–14 Euromaidan demonstrations, which ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.
He later served as speaker of parliament from 2016 to 2019 and remained a sitting lawmaker.
