Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched attacks on two commercial vessels in the Red Sea on Tuesday, damaging both ships. The attacks mark the Houthis’ first assaults on shipping in recent weeks.

The first incident targeted the Panama-flagged oil tanker Cordelia Moon about 70 miles off the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. According to the Joint Maritime Information Center, the ship was hit by an explosive-loaded drone boat, puncturing one of its ballast tanks. The vessel was heading toward the Suez Canal with armed security guards when it suffered damage.

Shortly after, another commercial ship also heading to the Suez Canal was struck by a missile. Details about this second vessel are still unclear, with conflicting reports on its identity, but maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the attack took place.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesperson, claimed responsibility for both attacks, stating the Cordelia Moon was struck with multiple ballistic and winged missiles, a drone, and an uncrewed surface boat. He also mentioned targeting a third vessel, but that report has yet to be independently verified.
