A new structure being erected alongside the Kerch Bridge in Russian-occupied Crimea has sparked speculation about its purpose. Satellite images reveal what appears to be a secondary bridge or parallel structure under construction next to the existing Kerch Bridge, which connects the Crimean Peninsula to mainland Russia across the Kerch Strait. The new construction has raised questions online and among observers, with no official explanation provided by Russian authorities.

One Crimea-focused Telegram channel suggested that the new structure could be intended to enhance the protection of the Kerch Bridge, which is a critical supply route for Russian forces in Crimea. The bridge holds strategic and symbolic significance, having been built after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Ukrainian military officials have also speculated on the construction’s purpose, with Dmitry Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian navy, noting that the structure might be an attempt to duplicate the Crimean Bridge, although he acknowledged that “there are many more questions than answers” regarding its exact function.

Photos showing steel piles being driven into place for the new construction first surfaced in early August. Satellite images clearly show booms on both sides of the ongoing work, adding to the speculation that the structure could be part of efforts to fortify the area against potential Ukrainian attacks. Earlier this year, Russia installed additional fortifications around the Kerch Bridge, including fencing sections made of barges, to protect it from Ukrainian naval drones.

The Kerch Bridge has been a target of Ukrainian forces, who have carried out several attacks on the structure in the past. The bridge’s strategic importance to Russia lies in its role as a vital supply route for troops and materials into Crimea from the Russian mainland. Given its significance, any new construction around the bridge is likely to be closely monitored by both Russian and Ukrainian forces.
