This month in central London, Strategic Command, alongside USSOCOM and SOFWERX, conducted the fifteenth iteration of the Innovation Foundry event (IF15). The theme for this year’s event was “Smart Cities – Future Challenges for Special Operations Forces,” focusing on the operational landscape of future urban environments and the role of advanced technologies.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including military specialists, industry leaders, academics, and professionals from non-traditional backgrounds such as actors and influencers. This mix was intended to foster unconventional thinking and innovative approaches to future special operations in complex cityscapes expected by 2035.
Participants engaged in a series of gamified scenarios that simulated the dense and technologically integrated environments of future smart cities. These scenarios required teams to navigate both physical and digital landscapes, addressing challenges posed by the Internet of Things, hyperconnectivity, and ubiquitous sensor networks. Issues such as electromagnetic spectrum competition and the logistical complexities of operating in high-rise urban areas were key discussion points.
Innovative solutions proposed during the event included the use of quantum gravimetry for precision navigation, uncrewed systems for urban maneuvering, and the development of digital twins to accurately simulate the urban operational environment. These ideas aimed to enhance the capabilities of Special Operations Forces by improving their situational awareness and operational effectiveness in densely populated urban settings.
The event also emphasized the importance of international collaboration, particularly between the UK and US, in developing future defense technologies and strategies. The next steps in the innovation process include a Rapid Capability Assessment (RCA), which will evaluate the most promising ideas from the event. This assessment will lead to the development of prototypes for further testing in the final phases of the Innovation Cycle.
