In Ansbach, Germany, a 21-year-old local man with a previous history of stealing U.S. military vehicles took another unauthorized ride, this time in a U.S. Army Humvee. The man, intoxicated at the time, drove the vehicle 24 miles before being found inside it early Tuesday. This wasn’t his first offense, as he had been cited twice in 2021 for similar thefts. U.S. Army officials are currently working with German police on the investigation.

Key Points:

  1. The German man stole the Army Humvee from Shipton Kaserne in Obereichenbach and drove it 24 miles to Neuherberg.
  2. The stolen vehicle belongs to the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment; it was undamaged and returned to its base.
  3. The suspect had been previously cited in 2021 for stealing Humvees and, on one occasion, took a vehicle on a 50-mile ride across multiple villages.
  4. The man was admitted for a mental health evaluation; German prosecutors will determine potential charges.
  5. Many military vehicles, designed for quick battlefield use, can be started without an ignition key, making them susceptible to theft.
