Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a former Afghan interpreter for the U.S. military, who fled the Taliban rule with his family to find refuge in the United States, was fatally shot while working as a Lyft driver in Washington, DC. Known for his selfless service and dedication to helping others, Ahmad Yar’s death has left a deep void in his community and among those who knew him closely.

Key Points:

  1. Nasrat Ahmad Yar worked as an interpreter for the U.S. military in Afghanistan from his early teenage years. He escaped the Taliban regime with his family and resettled in the U.S., where he worked as a Lyft driver in Washington, DC.
  2. Ahmad Yar’s journey to the U.S. was facilitated by the veteran community, including his friend Matthew Butler, an Army Special Forces veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan with Ahmad Yar as his interpreter.
  3. Despite his personal struggles to flee Afghanistan, Ahmad Yar made significant efforts to help other Afghan families escape Taliban rule.
  4. Before his death, Ahmad Yar was working to start his own tow truck company to support his family, as well as those still in Afghanistan.
  5. An investigation into Ahmad Yar’s murder is ongoing, with surveillance footage showing four people fleeing the scene, and a $25,000 reward offered for information leading to an arrest or conviction.
