A drone-captured image of a car allegedly filled with explosives on top of Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam suggests Russia’s involvement in the dam’s collapse on June 6, which caused widespread flooding, led to 52 deaths, and necessitated the evacuation of over 11,000 people. Both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of the disaster, with Ukrainian officials stating that Russian troops had established a firing position on the dam before the explosion. Russian President Vladimir Putin denied interest in damaging the dam, which flooded Russian-controlled territory, but acknowledged that Ukraine’s offensive strategies may have been disrupted due to the incident.

Key Points:

  1. A drone-captured image shows a car allegedly filled with explosives on top of Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam before its collapse.
  2. The dam’s collapse on June 6 resulted in 52 deaths, and the evacuation of more than 11,000 people due to widespread flooding.
  3. Ukrainian officials claim that Russian troops established a firing position on the dam before the explosion, while Russia denies responsibility.
  4. The international human rights law firm Global Rights Compliance supports Ukraine’s claim, stating it’s “highly likely Russian forces deliberately destroyed the dam.”
  5. Evidence from seismic signals discount an external attack, further suggesting the explosion was deliberate.
