Five soldiers were injured Wednesday morning when a U.S. Army sergeant opened fire on his fellow troops at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia.
Authorities identified the suspect as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28. Law enforcement responded to the shooting at 10:56 a.m. local time and placed the fort on lockdown by 11:04 a.m. Shortly before 2 p.m. authorities announced on social media that the installation was “all clear.”
The five wounded soldiers received initial treatment at the scene before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital.
“All five soldiers are in stable condition and expected to recover,” Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division said.
Lubas said the shooter opened fire at his workplace but was “immediately and without hesitation” subdued by fellow soldiers who witnessed the attack. He is currently in custody.
While the motive remains unknown, the general said the weapon used was a personal handgun, not military-issued.
Radford enlisted in 2018 as a logistics specialist and had no prior combat deployments. He was recently cited for driving under the influence and a traffic violation, with a court date set for August 20.
In a post on X, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he was saddened by the tragedy at Fort Stewart and assured the public that his administration has been in close contact with law enforcement personnel on the ground.

President Donald Trump expressed sympathy for the victims and vowed to hold the perpetrator accountable.
“The Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site to ensure that the perpetrator of this atrocity — which is exactly what it is — will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Trump said.
“The entire nation is praying for the victims and their families, and hopefully they’ll fully recover. And we can put this chapter behind [sic], but we’re not going to forget what happened.”
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River and home to over 8,000 active-duty soldiers. In 2022, the base was also the site of a separate fatal shooting involving a soldier.
