Three swimmers died on Sunday after encountering sea mines in prohibited coastal areas along Ukraine’s Black Sea coast in Odesa Oblast, regional officials reported.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said that one man was killed near Karolino-Buhaz, about 60 kilometers south of Odesa, and a man and woman died in Zatoka. Both beaches are closed to the public due to the risk of mines.
Kiper added that law enforcement officials are investigating the incidents. Authorities have not released the victims’ identities.
The Black Sea coast has been heavily mined since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Officials said mine risks will remain as long as the conflict continues and urge residents and tourists to use only designated beaches.
Kiper said there are 32 approved swimming zones in Odesa Oblast, 30 in the city, one in Chornomorsk, and one in the Primorsky district of Izmail, all inspected for mine hazards.
“Once again, I urge you: only swim where it is officially allowed. Ignoring safety rules is a direct threat to life and health and can result in irreversible loss,” Kiper added.
