Christian Lamb, a 103-year-old former officer of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, has been awarded the Legion of Honor by French President Emmanuel Macron for her crucial role in the D-Day landings. Working alone in a small London office, Lamb meticulously created maps that guided British troops onto Normandy’s beaches during World War II.
Lamb’s work involved detailed mapping of the French coast, highlighting features like railways, roads, and buildings to assist landing craft crews. “It was intense and exciting work, and obviously detail was vital. It was crucial that the maps were 100% accurate,” Lamb recalled. Her maps were instrumental in ensuring the success of the invasion, known as Operation Overlord, which began on June 6, 1944.
The secrecy surrounding Lamb’s work was so intense that she couldn’t share any details, not even with her husband. She worked in a tiny, secluded office, meticulously crafting maps with such precision that every feature had to be exact to ensure the success of the mission. Reflecting on her time in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, Lamb described the tension and excitement that filled the air as the invasion drew near. Security was paramount; any breach could have jeopardized the entire operation.
During the 80th anniversary commemoration of D-Day in Ver-sur-Mer, Normandy, Macron awarded Lamb the Legion of Honor, France’s highest decoration. “You were, in your own way, among those figures in the shadow of D-Day,” Macron told her. Lamb’s recognition highlights the vital roles women played behind the scenes in the war effort, including mapping, codebreaking, and operational support.

Lamb had a personal connection to the regions of Normandy, having studied in Caen and Bayeux before the war. Her dedication to her work was driven by a desire to see France liberated from Nazi control. Her efforts, along with those of many others, helped pave the way for the successful Allied invasion and the eventual liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
