The exercise was held in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand at a location named Auli. Auli, which is located at an elevation of approximately 9500 feet, is roughly 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Line of Actual Control, a contentious border that divides India and the areas controlled by China.
China’s protests have been disregarded by India and the US, who claim that “it is none of their (China’s) business.” The purpose of this exercise, which took place from November 15 to December 2, was for the Americans to gain firsthand experience in “mountain warfare” with what is likely the largest and most seasoned mountain army in the world. Even the Chinese have reluctantly adopted India’s high-altitude defense and offense due to its well-earned reputation.
