According to a study published in the Lancet Journal, the world population, currently around 7.8 billion people, is set to decline for the first time in the next century. According to their prediction, the world’s population will continue to grow until around 2060 when it will peak at 9.7 billion, then it will fall to 8.8 billion. The study also predicted that some regions including sub-Saharan and North Africa and the Middle East will actually see an increase in population. The study predicts a decline for the first time in human history due to fertility decline rather than an event like a pandemic or famine.
