A writer with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has argued that work culture, rather than the condition, can cause struggles in the workplace.
The author noted that working from home had allowed her to focus on tasks and structure her day according to her needs, rather than conforming to the traditional “office culture” that expects employees to work continuously. ADHD frequently goes overlooked in women, but neuropsychiatrist Theresa Cerulli said that distractibility and long periods of sustained attention were primary challenges in the workplace for those with ADHD. Cerulli recommended that employers ask staff about their needs and preferred ways of working, including factors such as productivity, timing, and location.
