Afghan security forces depend significantly on contractors paid by the United States to maintain and repair their array of planes, armored vehicles, and other assets. However, as part of Washington’s deal with the Taliban to evacuate all “foreign” soldiers, the nearly 18,000 contractors, as well as the majority of the US military personnel, are set to leave in the coming weeks. Afghan forces will be unable to maintain numerous of fighter planes, cargo planes, US-made helicopters, and drones flying for more than just a few weeks without the contractors’ assistance.
