Will Ukraine be the next Chechnya? | Al Jazeera

Must Read

As Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine continues, observers draw parallels between Russia’s ongoing operation and it’s past wars in Chechnya

Tumso Abdurakhmanov, a Chechen dissident and survivor of two Chechen wars is a prominent blogger, who spends his time criticizing current Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov. The Blogger fled his home country 6 years ago after Islam Kadyrov, the Chechen leader’s cousin, threatened him.

Abdurakhmanov believes that Putin desires the restoration of the USSR, stating that Putin lives with a desire for revenge, and an imperialist ambition of reacquiring all former soviet countries under his control. Tumso believes that Mariupol and Kharkiv are beginning to look similar to how Grozny did during the Chechen war, as Putin adopts a plan of methodical destruction after his failed attempt at a Blitzkrieg.
