Why do so many men skip regular health checkups? | Medical News Today

Must Read

Recent research indicates that guys are often hesitant to schedule doctor’s visits. Is it out of fear or because they feel disregarded by the medical community?

One-third of males believe yearly health checkups are unnecessary. Almost one-third of the participants said they often use social media for medical guidance. In the United States, heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of mortality among males. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13.2% of males aged 18 and older are in fair or poor health. Nearly forty percent of males questioned put the health of their pets before their own.

In the last year, 7 percent of white males, 14 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native men, and 15 percent of Hispanic men did not consult a doctor owing to expense. As breadwinners, males have traditionally believed that they cannot afford to keep appointments. Dr. Movassaghi said they had “no need to fear” if they found anything by not attending. Men are much more likely than women to attempt suicide. Each year, more than 6 million men in the United States have symptoms of depression, and more than 3 million suffer from an anxiety condition.
