Why daylight saving is so hard on the body — and what to do about it | VOX

Must Read

Springing forward and falling back may disrupt your health, as Daylight Saving Time takes its toll on your sleep, mood, and even safety.

Daylight saving time (DST), the practice of changing clocks forward by one hour in the spring and back by one hour in the fall, has been shown to have negative impacts on human health, particularly by disrupting sleep patterns. Changing the clock disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm, which affects everything from sleep to metabolism. The sudden shift can lead to a range of issues, including fatigue, irritability, depression, and even an increased risk of heart attacks, car accidents, and workplace injuries. People can ease the transition by prioritizing sleep in the weeks leading up to the change and by adjusting their sleep schedule gradually, 10-15 minutes at a time. There is also a movement in the US to adopt permanent DST, though this remains a subject of debate
