What Is a Snack, Really? | Eater

Must Read

The definition of a snack may seem straightforward – it’s that thing you eat between meals – but in reality, it is much more complicated than that.

A snack can be anything from a bag of chips to a toothpick impaled with an anchovy, olive and guindilla pepper, and the variations are endless. In a world where institutions are corrupt, a pandemic is changing the rules of society, and nature is exacting Biblical revenge, a snack promises safety, consistency, and a lack of judgment. Snacks answer the fundamental question of what we need, which is intrinsically tied to who we are. A bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, a box of Sun-Maid raisins, or the void left in a tub of Rainbow Chip frosting that has been scraped clean – whatever we want it to be, a snack is a reflection of ourselves. While multinational food corporations may make the process of creating a snack complicated, the idea behind a snack remains simple – a moment of respite and pleasure in a chaotic world.
