A Kazakh opposition leader told Reuters that the West needs to pull Kazakhstan out of Russian influence in order to avoid a recreation of the Soviet Union. Protests in the country began this past week as fuel prices swelled but it soon grew to encompass opposition to the former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who protestors say remains in control. Nazarbayev’s hand-picked successor, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on Moscow to uphold the Collective Security Treaty Organization between the two nations and send troops to crush the movement.
