West Africa: Explosions, attacks in Mali, Niger kill over 100 | DW

Must Read

On Sunday, Mali was shaken by explosions that hit a truck and a UN camp, while another attack in neighboring Niger attacked an international military installation. West African countries have struggled to quell jihadist insurgencies in the region, with some groups swearing allegiance to terrorist organizations like al-Qaida and the so-called Islamic State (IS).

The strike in Niger targeted a base used by countries in the region to combat insurgencies. According to officials, 79 assailants and 29 soldiers were slain. According to an army spokesman, hundreds of people arrived on motorbikes at the Fianto base in the Tillaberi district to carry out the attack.

The G5 Joint Force, which consists of the five Sahel nations of Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Mali, and Burkina Faso, uses the Fianto base. It was established in 2017 to provide order to their shared border areas.
