When running for governor of Florida in 2018, Ron DeSantis identified himself as an Iraq War veteran; yet, hundreds of Americans have incorrectly questioned: “Was Ron DeSantis a Navy SEAL? ”
Since Floridians elected the former sailor as governor four years ago, information about DeSantis’ time in the Navy has been making the rounds on the internet. Google data shows that Americans first searched “Was Ron DeSantis a Navy SEAL? November 2018” In fact, DeSantis was a Navy veteran. His Navy experience is the subject of an entire page on his campaign website. The section refers to when DeSantis deployed to Iraq as a SEAL team advisor, and it features a video and mentions his experience “advising Seal Team 1.” The Florida native may be seen in a picture posing in front of a “bone frog” artwork that has been making the rounds online for years. The bone frog has become a symbol of remembrance for departed colleagues since SEALs are known as “frogmen.” DeSantis appears to have initially shared the picture of himself on Facebook in 2012, during his successful bid to represent Florida’s 6th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. In 2007, DeSantis did deploy with the SEALs. The picture was probably taken during that time. DeSantis, however, wasn’t a SEAL.
