VA hospital denied emergency care to dying vet because staff couldn’t verify his military service | Military Times

Must Read

The VA hospital issue has led to “repeated failures” in veteran treatment.

A Gainesville, Florida VA hospital denied care to a dying veteran with heart failure. The inability of first responders to establish his military status was a blatant violation of federal law. No one has been fired for the event in 2020, even though a brief intervention may have saved the veteran’s life. The Inspector General’s report reveals many more emergency department failures associated with “nurses’ inability to detect and appropriately evaluate the emergency medical status of the patient.”

The VA personnel informed investigators that the lack of communication about the patients’ health state caused misunderstanding. By the end of September, an independent evaluation of the issue will have been conducted.
