In order to deliver additional ketamine treatments for veterans with various depressive illnesses, the largest provider of ketamine therapy in the US has strengthened its partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs Community Care Network.
While ketamine has a reputation as a date-rape drug used for its dissociative effects, it has also received praise as a treatment for those with mental health conditions who have failed to respond to more conventional therapies. Research published in January 2022 found that between 14% and 16% of veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan experience PTSD or depression. Many of them find it impossible to wait months or even years for more conventional therapies like counseling or widely used medications like Prozac or Wellbutrin. The SPRAVATO ketamine spray is intended to treat the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder and Treatment-Resistant Depression, two prominent depressive disorders that are prevalent in the veteran population, when used in conjunction with an oral depressant.
