An op-ed written in Military Times argued for the creation of a special operations forces specific branch of the American military. It is a legitimate question with arguments on both sides. USSOCOM is already a unified combatant command on par with the other geographic combatant commands like AFRICOM or EURCOM but upgrading it to the level of the Army or Navy would present an entire new set of challenges and possibly reduce the group’s ground effectiveness and ability to problem solve on the fly. When working correctly, SOF operates much differently than conventional forces with permission to act in their own and the country’s best interest without going through too much bureaucracy. Elevating their status would only make their jobs harder.
