Using Fiction to Find Your Strategy | HBR

Design fiction may assist your organization in anticipating and shaping the future. 

Design fiction is a method that immerses executives and staff in a variety of potential futures. Transformation roadmaps are generated using artifacts such as short films, fabricated newspaper articles, and imagined advertising. Unlike many strategic foresight methods, design fiction does not aim to determine what is most likely to occur. Instead, it helps design desired futures that other technologies make invisible. A “Christmas is over” situation, for instance, led to a new objective for a fragrance brand’s personnel. 

The auto insurance company’s workshops shifted its emphasis from insuring vehicles to facilitating individual travel. Design fiction has assisted scores of global corporations in developing alternative strategies. A recent study with an oil and gas corporation, for instance, helped determine how to design a future in which people in distant locations are less socially isolated. We employ design fiction to create shareable artifacts (e.g., short films, imaginary newspaper stories) that may serve as a prototype for the company’s future.
