US and UK forces launched precision airstrikes on 18 Houthi sites across Yemen. This operation, the fourth of its kind, was a response to the Houthis’ continued aggression against commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The Pentagon highlighted that the strikes focused on undermining the Houthis’ weapons storage, drone operations, air defense systems, and a helicopter, all integral to their sustained offensive against maritime vessels linked to Western and Israeli interests.
The strikes come as the Houthi rebels continue their assaults on shipping vessels in the region, leading to major shipping companies rerouting away from the Red Sea. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the commitment to defending the free flow of commerce and protecting lives in critical waterways, while UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps underscored the duty to safeguard navigation freedom and maritime safety.
Previous strikes have had limited effect on the Houthis ability to disrupt the shipping route, having registered 45 attacks on naval and commercial vessels since mid-November.Â
