An elite Afghan commando who received U.S. military training was detained in Texas for attempting to enter Mexico in search of asylum in the nation he had previously fought for.
After Kabul fell in August 2021, Abdul Wasi Safi fled into hiding and traveled across two continents in the hopes of obtaining a special immigrant visa that would allow him to live legally in the United States. Instead, while attempting to cross the Rio Grande, he was detained at the border. If his deportation goes through, he could be killed since the Taliban are after him. According to accounts, Wasi was the only immigrant in a group of more than 100 who was turned away from the country that day.
