According to Defense Department and American officials, the Pentagon would increase military combat training for Ukrainian forces, using the slower winter months to teach larger groups more advanced fighting techniques.
About 3,100 Ukrainian soldiers have already received training from the US on how to operate and maintain a variety of weapons and other equipment. According to Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, training will start “around January timeframe” and involve training 500 Ukrainian soldiers per month. The training will take place at the Grafenwoehr training facility in Germany, according to U.S. officials. Additionally, the goal is to use the winter to improve the Ukrainian forces’ capabilities so they will be better equipped to fend off any increase in Russian strikes or attempts to increase Russia’s territorial gains.
