Arturo Guzmán Decena was shot and killed by soldiers in November 2002 in a restaurant in the Tamaulipas state of Mexico after they received a tip.
The American 7th Special Forces Group, sometimes known as the “snake eaters,” trained Mexican troops in a wide range of subjects in the early 1990s. About ten years later, some of those same soldiers would carry out massacres or subject captives to levels of torture unheard of during the Mexican drug war. Los Zetas, an armed criminal group that would grow to be the most savage and deadly drug cartel in Mexico, was founded by Decena. High-ranking members of the Los Zetas, including Decena, had received martial arts instruction from the best in the world while serving in the Mexican Special Forces.
