US soldier’s Purple Heart award sheds light on intense 2020 ambush in Somalia | Task and Purpose

Must Read

An Army doctor serving at Fort Hood’s Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center in Texas was awarded the Purple Heart earlier this month, exactly two years to the day after he was wounded in an ambush in Somalia in 2020.

Despite his wounds, Brillhart quickly sprung into action, providing medical attention and evacuation for other injured Americans and Somalis before manning a fighting position for 72 hours, “inflicting heavy casualties.” The statement claims that on September 7, 2020, in Somalia, Brillhart and a group of American and Somali partner forces were subjected to heavy small arms fire following the detonation of a vehicle-borne explosive device 50 meters away from their position  in an unspecified part of Somalia.
