A Sunday mortar shelling of an Operation Barkhane base in Gao, Mali resulted in the death of a French soldier and the injury of an American. U.S. Africa Command announced the U.S. service member sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The French solider was a 24 year old artilleryman named Alexandre Martin. Over 50 Frenchmen have died over the course of nine years fighting in Mali.
Operation Barkhane is the French-led counterterrorism operation taking place throughout the Sahel. The injured American was transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany the same day the attack occurred.
There hasn’t been a documented case of an American sustaining injury in Mali since 2018 when 30 local al-Qaida affiliates assaulted a U.N. Super Camp near Timbuktu’s airport.
