Ukrainian Special Forces sources told VICE News they’re already coordinating with American counterparts on how to resist Russian forces, and prepping for insurgency situations.
According to Pentagon press secretary John Kirby, American soldiers only aid the Ukrainian military in loading weapons and providing “lethal support” aboard convoys. Kirby said short chats between soldiers about how to utilize their equipment occur, but this does not constitute formal training. The comments came only a day after President Joe Biden announced that American personnel trained Ukrainian fighters on Polish territory.
The Biden administration and the Pentagon have been balancing on a diplomatic tightrope, often downplaying the war drumbeats from television news and Congress. They are giving Ukraine maximal military aid but abstaining from active involvement in the conflict and taking care not to precipitate a confrontation with Russia. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that NATO is falling short and that his nation needs tanks and fighter planes to continue against Russia.
