Washington is stepping up its military ties with Rabat while attempting to offset Russian influence in Africa.
The United States intends to establish a military-industrial base in the Alawi Kingdom in an effort to improve ties with Morocco and assert its authority in North Africa. US President Joe Biden has reportedly directed Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to create a backup plan to set up such a base, according to the New York Daily News. The US media believes that Biden and Austin discussed Washington’s new global military policy during a high-level meeting in late December during which this idea was offered. According to the New York Daily News, the US president has instructed the defense secretary to exert influence on the Pentagon to simplify the logistical and legal facets of the nation’s investments in the defense industry in Morocco.
