American SOF have been quietly distributing resources and medical care to communities in northeastern Syria who have not received much care during recent years of conflict.
The visits are conducted in partnership with the Syrian Defense Forces who have proven to be a reliable ally in the fight to rid the region of remaining ISIS combatants.
The approximately 1000 American troops in Syria are working with the SDF to bring much needed stability to the region to not allow ISIS to regain control. US officials are adamant the humanitarian effort is not “mission creep” but an effort to provide another means to counter ISIS.
The area has seen high levels of conflict in recent years, American troops have examined or treated over 200 patients who were caught in the violence. While SOF have participated in humanitarian relief missions for a long time, the efforts in Syria are part of the Pentagon’s reorganization of force use in the wake of our withdrawal from Afghanistan.
