US military strikes Somalian al-Shabab combatants
According to the US military, an airstrike was conducted in support of operations by the Somali government against the al-Shabab extremist group, which resulted in the deaths of some of the group’s militants . A U.S. government statement Africa Command stated on Saturday that the airstrike was conducted on Thursday at the request of the Somali National Army and in “collective self-defense” close to the town of Cadale in the Middle Shabelle region. Mogadishu, the capital, is located 220 kilometers (137 miles) north of Cadale. Al-Shabab fighters, according to the U.S. statement, have been fighting Somali military forces.
