Anti-radiation medications at the cost of $290 million were purchased by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in response to nuclear warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin to the US and Europe.

The HHS announced in a statement that Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, California, is developing the medication Nplate to treat acute radiation sickness (ARS). Nplate is a part of long-standing, ongoing efforts in the US to improve readiness to save lives during radiological and nuclear events. HHS seeks to improve and safeguard the health and well-being of all Americans by offering efficient health and human services and encouraging medical advancements. The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a division of the HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases assisted in the signing of the agreement.
