Denys Kiryeyev, a 45-year-old banker, was assassinated for being a traitor. However, days after Mr. Kiryeyev’s body was discarded, he was buried next to Ukraine’s first foreign minister and treated like a hero.
A Security Service of Ukraine official said that Mr. Kiryeyev was killed by the SBU because he was supposedly spying for Moscow. The SBU is the country’s main internal intelligence organization. He was buried next to Ukraine’s first foreign minister General Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of the military intelligence service of Ukraine, claimed that Mr. Kiryeyev had provided information from his contacts in Russia that had assisted Ukrainian soldiers in successfully defending their capital city in February. Mr. Kiryeyev will get a posthumous medal for “outstanding duty in defense of state sovereignty and state security,” according to documents approved by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
