The US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has expressed an interest in developing advanced technologies for use in “influence operations, digital deception, communication disruption, and disinformation campaigns”.
SOCOM released a document in 2020 that listed its desire to acquire futuristic tools and gadgets to help hunt and kill targets, but an updated version released in October 2020 added a new section entitled “Advanced technologies for use in Military Information Support Operations (MISO)”. The section seeks to enable MISO to “craft and direct influence operations”, with a “next-generation capability” for collecting data through public and open-source information streams. The special forces have a history of using secret missions, subterfuge, sabotage, and disruption campaigns. The proposals are being accepted by SOCOM until 2025.
