President Biden said Thursday that a Special Forces team conducted an overnight raid in northwestern Syria that resulted in the death of Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, ISIS’s top leader. Reports state that al-Qurayshi died upon detonating a suicide vest which also killed several of his family members. Six children and four women were among the dead, no members of the American team were injured. Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was named al-Baghdadi’s successor in 2019 after his death. The raid took place in the town of Idlib which is broadly under the control of Turkish fighters, but jihadist groups have taken refuge in the area.
